Firmly re-seat BOTH ink cartridges and re-test to determine if error condition can be cleared before deciding whether or not the ink cartridge is damaged. First thoroughly clean BOTH cartridge’s rear electrical contacts using an isopropyl alcohol dampened lint-free towel and ensure no excess ink residue remains on cartridge. If the printer’s ink cartridge indicators flash, blink or display #error #codes then the ink cartridge may be electrically damaged and will need to be replaced. Press and hold the ‘Stop/Reset’ button for 5-8 seconds…display should display a one (1) and ink cartridge lights/LEDs should not be lit, nor should they be flashing. To reset the #Canon cartridge low ink alert message(s), perform the suggested procedures. However, if you are using refilled cartridges, the printer might get confused. Each Canon printer is equipped with a special ink chip that recognizes when the ink has run low. If you replace the Canon 240, 240XL, 240XXL, 241 or 241XL ink cartridge with a refilled ink cartridge and receive a message that says “Ink has run out,” or observe steady/flashing ink cartridge lights at the printer, then you need to reset the printer to override the ink counter.
